How to Choose the Right Voice Over Artist for Your Brand

Every brand has a voice, whether it decides on one deliberately or not. When it comes to video, adverts, e-learning or IVR systems, that voice is quite literal, and the artist you choose to deliver it can make or break how your audience receives your message. With so many options out there, from marketplaces to freelancers to agencies, it helps to know exactly what separates a good fit from a great one. And, we all one a great one!

1. Start with your brand personality, not just the script

Before you even listen to a demo reel, get clear on how your brand should sound. Warm and reassuring? Punchy and energetic? Calm and authoritative? A voice artist who understands tone as well as delivery will read a script the way your brand needs it read, not just the way it's written. Sometimes it's about what's not being said rather than what is.

2. Listen for range, not just a nice voice

A pleasant voice is good, but not everything. What actually matters is range: can they shift between conversational and corporate, upbeat and sincere, without sounding forced? Listen to a few different demos from the same artist across different genres, whether that's commercial, corporate narration, or e-learning, and yes, evem character based to see how adaptable they really are. You could be surprised and be inspired!

3. Check their home studio setup

Professional voice artists record from treated home studios, not a bedroom with a duvet on the wall. Broadcast-quality audio, free from hiss, room echo or background noise, should be a given. If you're unsure, simply ask what equipment and treatment they're recording with. Your brand deserves the best, so make sure it sounds the best.

4. Ask about turnaround and direction

A reliable voice artist will be upfront about turnaround times and happy to take direction, whether that means a quick re-read, a change in pacing, or matching a reference read you supply. Clear, easy communication at this stage is usually a good sign of how the rest of the project will go. The process should be simple.

5. Look at experience in your specific niche

E-learning, corporate narration, commercials and IVR all call for different skills. An artist with a track record in your niche will already understand pacing, terminology and the kind of energy that works, saving you time on direction and revisions.Getting this right from the start means a smoother project and a voice that genuinely represents your brand.

If you want a professional sound and easy process for your next project, then please get in touch and have a listen my demo reels to hear the range on offer. And if you want a free sample please feel free to ask.
